2023 Defender Service Honorees Award

West Ashley, S.C., Feb. 20th, 2024

Today, Charleston Animal Society took delivery of a customized Land Rover Defender 130 SUV from Land Rover West Ashley after winning one of six categories in the 2023 Defender Service Awards presented by CHASE. The organization was given the “Defender Service Honorees Award,” which recognized previous finalists from 2021 and 2022 that didn’t originally win their categories, but were truly deserving with all they do to benefit their local communities.

For 150 years, Charleston Animal Society (CAS) has prevented cruelty to animals and has been South Carolina’s top-rated nonprofit for the past decade. From creating the first no-kill community in the Southeast to building the first no-kill state across the entire southern U.S., CAS is an international model for lifesaving success through focus, strategy and determination. As a leading emergency responder for hurricanes, flooding and large-scale animal cruelty operations, CAS' workforce of 85 employees and 2,400 volunteers rescues and cares for up to 20,000 animals annually. From finding families for homeless animals and preventing unwanted litters to guiding children toward compassion and fighting cruelty wherever it exists, the society’s mantra is “solving problems, not just reacting to them.”

Defender has always been known for empowering organizations across the globe with capable vehicles to facilitate humanitarian work. To keep this tradition strong and to honor those who exemplify these values, Defender has announced the six winners for each category of the third annual Defender Service Awards, presented by CHASE. These awards recognize the remarkable contributions of non-profit organizations in the United States and Canada that are making a positive impact in their communities and upholding the Defender's ethos as a beacon of liberty.

The winning organizations have been awarded a custom Defender 130 SUV that will aid them in their work with ease. The Defender 130 vehicle features three rows of seating for up to eight people and 88.9 cubic feet (2,516 liters) of load capacity. The Defender 130 vehicle is fully capable of assisting these organizations with transporting animals, gear or volunteers.

On behalf of South Carolinians and folks across the entire southeastern United States who suffer the wrath of hurricanes each year, along with law enforcement agencies in our state who enforce animal cruelty laws by way of puppy mill, hoarding and other animal cruelty seizures, we are all grateful to Defender for its generosity in providing us with a vehicle so that we can more effectively navigate challenging situations and save more animals from harm’s way,” said Charleston Animal Society President and CEO Joe Elmore, CAWA, CFRE. “Defender is a model for corporate philanthropy, helping countless individuals in their time of need and alleviating suffering in so many forms. It is an honor to partner with Defender and fully engage in both our missions. We are very grateful."

Charleston Animal Society has also been awarded $5000 from Presenting Partner CHASE, along with an additional $2,500 from Premier Sponsor, Warner Bros. Discovery to further aid the organization’s noble cause.

About Charleston Animal Society

For 150 years, the mission of Charleston Animal Society has always been the prevention of cruelty to animals. Over 15,000 animals will turn to Charleston Animal Society for caring, compassion and hope this year alone. In addition to caring for homeless animals, adopting them into new homes, and reuniting lost pets with their families, the organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of both man-made and natural disasters. The comprehensive shelter medicine program not only provides direct services for as many as 1,200 animals in our system of care at one time, the shelter veterinarians also spay or neuter upwards of 10,000 dogs and cats each year and they provide emergency medical services to critically ill and injured animals arriving at the shelter daily.
